Inflation ticks up in January in Kazakhstan amid volatile food prices

The consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.1% in January, up from 0.9% in December last year, according to the National Statistics Bureau data published Monday, Kazinform News Agency reports.

The National Statistics Bureau data snowed food prices rise 1.4%, paid services prices 1.1% and non-food prices 0.6%.

Among the sharpest increases was the cost of potatoes, which has surged by 16.4%, cabbages – 8.8%, garlic – 6.4%, cucumber – 5.4%, grape – 4.1%, sweet pepper – 3.9%, tomatoes – 3.5%, butter – 4.1%, sunflower oil – 3.9% and pickled herring – 3.4%, while prices for buckwheat drop by 1.5%, oranges – 0.8% and rice – 0.6%.

The National Statistics Bureau data indicate household bills rise propped up by prices for intercom services up by 4.1%, housing maintenance – 2.5%, central heating tariffs – 2.2%, hot water – 1.7%, and electricity – 1%.

Mail and parcel prices rose by 17.7%, while auto insurance and notary services prices increase by 6.5% each.

Prices in January were up for household appliances – 3.9%, vehicles – 2.4% and textile items and utensils 0.8% each.

Atyrau region reported the highest CPI indicator on a monthly basis – 2.2%, and Almaty and Turkestan region the lowest – 0.7%.

Earlier, Kazakhstan’s National Bank Chairman informed inflation stood within the target range of 8.6% in 2024.
