Early this February world-renowned singer from Kazakhstan Dimash Qudaibergen was named as one of nine Goodwill Ambassadors of the International Organization for Migration. Kazinform News Agency correspondent contacted the Organization with an inquiry to find out how Dimash will contribute to addressing the migration crisis in Central Asia and the Middle East and why he was chosen to the role of the Goodwill Ambassador.

In an interview to Kazinform Agency correspondent, Director General of the International Organization for Migration Ms Amy Pope said that Dimash Qudaibergen was chosen as the Goodwill Ambassador of the International Organization for Migration because of his will to change the world for the better.

Your Excellency Ms. Pope, would you tell us about the main activities of the International Organization for Migration, including in the Central Asian region?

The IOM works to establish safe and legal pathways for migrants, protecting migrants in crisis situations, and making migration work for all. Millions of people are on the move in Central Asia, largely to find work, and helping these people do so safely at a time of turbulence is one of our priorities in the region.

What is the principle of selection for Ambassadors and representatives of the Organization? Why did the choice fall on our compatriot Dimash Qudaibergen? What criteria the Organization implements to evaluate candidates and what is the selection procedure?

The Regional and National Goodwill Ambassadors were formally nominated by IOM representatives in their respective countries, who identified them as leaders and role models, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to advocacy and social causes. Following a thorough assessment, Dimash Qudaibergen was selected due to his powerful voice, his desire to make a positive difference in the world, and his wide-ranging influence with millions of young followers. We are excited to welcome him to the IOM Goodwill Ambassador team, and to have him lend his voice to support displaced people and vulnerable communities worldwide.

Ms Pope, there are significant conflicts in the world right now. Regarding the conflict in the Middle East, what kind of work is being carried out by the International Organization for Migration in this region?

The IOM works closely with other UN agencies to support the response in Gaza and the region. With the majority of the population having been displaced, work to provide shelter and emergency assistance to these civilians is critical.

Ms. Pope, in what way do you think the appointment of Dimash Qudaibergen as the IOM Ambassador will contribute to improving the work of the Organization?

Our Goodwill Ambassadors are helping us raise the profile of the positive contribution migrants make to society and global economic growth, and Dimash is helping us to shine a spotlight on these important topics. He and the other Ambassadors are inspiration figures, and we are grateful to them for supporting our work.

Could a common (non-media person) become an Ambassador or representative of the Organization?

The IOM’s Goodwill Ambassadors have large numbers of followers online, and through their social channels, help us advocate for the rights of people who’ve been displaced. We also engage with influencers to help us spread our messaging. While there are specific eligibility requirements to become a Goodwill Ambassador, everyone has the ability to advocate for migrants online through their own social channels, and we appreciate and are grateful to all who support our work and share our messages about people on the move.
