“It is 89 seconds to midnight”: Doomsday clock moves one second closer to the end

On Tuesday, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set the Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds to midnight, which is the closest it has ever been to midnight, Kazinform News Agency reports.

The change reflects increasing serious dangers mentioned in a 2025 Doomsday Clock Statement by the Bulletin.

For the last two years, the clock, which symbolizes urgent global threats instead of providing an exact risk measure, has stayed at 90 seconds to midnight.

“In 2024, humanity edged ever closer to catastrophe. Trends that have deeply concerned the Science and Security Board continued, and despite unmistakable signs of danger, national leaders and their societies have failed to do what is needed to change course,” the Bulletin stated.

The statement pointed out several reasons for the situation, including increasing nuclear dangers, worsening climate issues, fast-growing artificial intelligence, new global diseases, and the spread of false information.

“Blindly continuing on the current path is a form of madness,” the statement reads.

Scientists from the Manhattan Project started the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947, focusing on the dangers of nuclear weapons. In 2007, the publication started focusing on climate change as part of its goal. For the last 78 years, the Doomsday Clock has been changed based on how scientists assess the threats to humanity.

Earlier Kazinform reported that Kostanay Clock Tower, called by local residents a “Big Ben”, is one of the architectural monuments attracting tourists’ attention.
