Japan proposes to S. Korea to take isles dispute to int'l court

TOKYO.  August 17. KAZINFORM Japan proposed to South Korea on Friday that the two countries jointly take their dispute over a pair of sparsely inhabited islands to the International Court of Justice, government officials said.

In Seoul, a South Korean official said the country would reject the request,  Kyodo reports.

Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba made the proposal to South Korean Ambassador to Japan Shin Kak Soo during their meeting in Tokyo, as a countermeasure to South Korean President Lee Myung Bak's unprecedented trip to one of the disputed isles last week.
