TOKYO. April 16. KAZINFORM Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday that four crippled reactors at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant will be classified as defunct as of Thursday, reducing the total number of Japan's 'operable' commercial reactors to 50 from 54.

The Nos. 1 to 4 reactors at the six-reactor complex in northeastern Japan sustained major damage in the nuclear disaster triggered by the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Three reactors suffered meltdowns, Kyodo reports.

The Electricity Business Law requires utilities to seek the permission of the industry minister in changing the output of a nuclear power plant. Tokyo Electric Power filed an application over the scrapping of the Nos. 1 to 4 reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant on March 30.
