Taking part in the opening ceremony were ambassadors and permanent representatives of the CIS member states, officials from the Foreign Ministry of Belarus, representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in the country, top officials of the CIS Executive Committee, BelTA reports.

Igor Gromyko said that such events are regularly held by other CIS member states, too. "We are a family; we take part in anniversary events of each other. It is always informative and interesting," Russia' permanent representative at the charter and other bodies of the CIS said.

It is commonly believed that the first Russian state was founded in 862 when Slavonic and Ugro-Finnic tribes decided to invite a "person from outside" in a bid to put an end to feuds between them, one of ancient legends says. The Varangian prince Rurik was the one who came to Rus and became the founder of the first Russian dynasty that reigned over the country for more than seven centuries.

The biggest celebrations dedicated to the anniversary are held in Veliky Novgorod and Novgorod Oblast. The anniversary is also marked in ancient Russian cities and towns, including Belozersk, Vladimir, Vologda, Kostroma, Moscow, Pskov, Rostov and Staraya Ladoga.
