Kazakh boxer Serik Sapiyev named UNESCO Champion for Sport

ASTANA. July 25. KAZINFORM Kazakhstani boxer Serik Sapiyev has been designated UNESCO Champion for Sport, having become the 13th sport personality to attain this title, Kazinform has learnt from Astana Sport newspaper.

Chairman of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO Mr. Imangali Tasmagambetov was the first to congratulate Sapiyev, the 2012 Olympic champion, the Val Barker Trophy holder and two-time world champion, on the prestigious award.

"It is an honor and I am delighted that UNESCO sees me in that capacity," said Sapiyev. "There are only 12 personalities who have been named UNESCO Champions for Sport. Hopefully, I will be up to the title. I will go to great lengths to foster sports in Kazakhstan."

Sapiyev also said he will enter one of the British universities to major in Sports Management under the Bolashak Scholarship Scheme.

UNESCO Champion for Sport is a title given to world-class sport personalities who purvey UNESCO's message across the world. They promote the values of physical education and sports with a view of building a better future for younger generations.

Formula One racer Michael Schumacher, hockey player Vyacheslav Fetisov, footballer Pele, boxers Vitaliy and Wladimir Klitschko and other deserving athletes were honored with this title.
