Kazakh capital faces shortage of over 700 doctors

The Kazakh capital is facing the shortage of up to 700 doctors, while Almaty and Shymkent are lacking 497 and 234 doctors respectively, Kazinform News Agency cites the Kazakh Healthcare Ministry.

By the regions, the most shortage is recorded in Turkistan region up to 135, Akmola region up to 116, and West Kazakhstan up to 89.

The top 5 most in-demand doctors are anesthesiologists, resuscitators up to 306, surgeons - 210, ophthalmologists - 112, otorhinolaryngologists - 83, vascular surgeons – 44, obstetricians-gynecologists - 253, and neonatologists - 87.

According to 1st Vice Minister of Healthcare of Kazakhstan Timur Sultangaziyev, a third of graduates of medical universities chooses rather to work at private healthcare facilities than at state medical organizations. He added the Ministry initiated a package of additional incentive measures to increase the prestige of medical practice in rural areas, including internship programs and psychological support.
