Kazakh Higher Education Ministry reveals list of local universities popular among applicants

The Kazakh Science and Higher Education Ministry has revealed domestic universities popular among graduates, Kazinform International News Agency correspondent reports.

Countrywide, there are 120 universities, including 11 national, 29 state, 14 non-civil, one autonomous, one international, 16 corporatized and 48 privates ones.

Traditionally, the country’s popular universities are located in major cities such as the capital of Astana, Almaty and Shymkent, including the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, Gumilyev Eurasian National University and others, reads a response of the Kazakh Science and Higher Education Ministry to Kazinform International News Agency’s inquiry.

It was pointed out that the regional universities are also of interest among school graduates, as Kazakhstan seeks to open branches of the world’s top foreign universities in almost all of its regions.

For instance, last year the branch of the University of Arizona at the Kozybayev North Kazakhstan State University admitted applicants from 18 regions of the country, the ministry informed.

To note, this year, 188,245 students graduated from schools across the country.

In 2023, the number of those went to universities stood at 171,699, including 68,240 obtaining grants.

The ministry added that this year the country is to allocate 360 grants under international agreements as well as an additional 490 grants under scholarship programs for foreign citizens and non-resident Kazakh nationals.
