Kazakh Majilis Speaker addresses IPU Assembly in Geneva

The high-profile parliamentary event themed "The IPU at 125: Renewing our commitment to peace and democracy" is set to take place until March 20. The Kazakhstani parliamentarian noted the importance of one of the oldest international inter-parliamentary organizations, stressing that all countries despite their size, economic and political might and geographical location may enter into equitable parliamentary dialogue. N. Nigmatulin drew attention of those present to the contribution of Kazakhstani MPs to strengthening global peace. As for priorities of Kazakhstan's foreign policy, he stressed that all initiatives of President Nursultan Nazarbayev aimed at promoting stable development and security were of paramount importance. They are projects on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, Kazakhstan's model of inter-ethnic and inter-confessional tolerance, and a complex of measures on strengthening cooperation to ensure peace and security in Asia. The Inter-Parliamentary Union established in 1889 is an international organization that coordinates actions of parliamentarians around the world. The IPU has permanent observer status at the United Nations. The national parliaments of 163 countries are members of the IPU.
