Kazakh nuclear power referendum: 13 foreign observers apply for accreditation so far

Kazakhstan has so far extended invitations to 36 countries to monitor the referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant the country is to hold on October 6 this year, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission Secretary Mukhtar Yerman informed that as of today 13 observers from one international organization and five countries have submitted their applications for accreditation to the Central Commission on the Referendum. These include five observers from the CIS, one observer from the US, two observers from Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Moldova each, and one observer from Armenia.

The information on observers is to be updated as more proposals for accreditation are received. The draft regulation of the Special Commission regarding accreditation of international organizations and foreign countries has been developed, said Yerman.

To note, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the holding of a nationwide referendum on the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant on October 6, 2024.
