Kazakh PM tasks to address shortage of ships

 Kazakh Prime minister Alikhan Smailov noted the high potential of domestic sea ports during the government meeting, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

In general, the potential of our sea ports is very high, as their cargo handling could be increased 3 times. Therefore, it is necessary to eliminate all bottlenecks for a more effective use of our infrastructure’s existing resources. For example, the shortage of ships, especially ferries, needs to be addressed. Next year, construction of the first ferries is to begin. Four are expected to be built in 2027, said Smailov.

Kazakhstan has no a shipbuilding plant, noted the Kazakh PM.

The issue of expanding junction railway stations and access roads to ports remains unresolved.

There also the opportunities to increase shipping via the Irtysh River by almost 2.5times... In general, the development of water transport is to have a multiplier effect on the growth of transport sector, transit and trade, added Smailov.
