Kazakh scientists explore dams with underwater drones
Karaganda scientists explore dam deterioration with underwater drones that help make more exact measurements and prevent dam breaches, Kazinform News Agency reports.
In 2014 over 50 homes were inundated after the dam in Kokpekty village in Karaganda region failed. The flooding damage was estimated at almost 1.5 billion tenge. The main cause of the dam failure in Kokpekty was its deterioration.
To avoid such situations the scientists of the Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University started to explore dams and water reservoirs using digital laser equipment.
Most of the dams in Karaganda region were built in the 50-60s of the last century.
The main purpose of research work is to carry out multifactorial studies of water management structures to assess safety and justify the reliability of bulk structures to timely detect problems and unfavorable processes, assess safety and risk of accidents, study the impact of economic activities and infrastructure of water management and hydraulic structures on the environment, develop measures to neutralize negative factors.
The scientists use the unique underwater drone PowerRay Explorer which has the potential to revolutionize marine geodesy.
