Kazakh surgeons perform unique 6-hour-long surgery to restore blood flow to brain
Neurosurgeons of the regional hospital in Kostanay performed a six-hour-long surgery on cerebral vessels. This surgery is unique in nature since the doctors had to perform an operation on vessels that are less than a hair's width, Kazinform News Agency reports.
Their patient, a 53-year-old woman, suffered two strokes before. The imaging revealed an occlusion of brain vessels. Her right carotid artery became blocked, the regional hospital said in a statement.
An extra-intracranial microvascular anastomosis (EICMA) was applied to restore the woman’s cerebral blood flow.
The uniqueness of the surgery lies in the structure features of the vessels, their diameter ranges from 1 to 2 mm. The thread diameter is twice as thin as the hair's width. 12 stitches necessary for a satisfactory closure were put on 1 mm.
The surgery went well, the press service said.
