Kazakh-US cooperation in nuclear nonproliferation discussed in Astana

Main purpose of Mr. Benkert?s visit to Kazakhstan is the discussion of issues of cooperation in the sphere of nonproliferation of nuclear and mass destruction weapon. Along with this topic the two parties discussed further prospects of bilateral relations and interaction of Kazakh and US defense departments. Kazakh Minister noted that Kazakh-US interaction in military sphere developed dynamically. The parties noted that the important part of strengthening of military cooperation was joint participation in such exercises as ?Regional Cooperation?, ?Golden Medic? and Steppe Eagle?. One of the main directions of Kazakh-American cooperation in the sphere of defense and security is ensuring of regional security. Kazakhstan is interested in economic and political stability of Afghanistan. Our country always supported antiterrorist operation in Afghanistan and offered its military airfield to NATO Forces in Afghanistan. In December 2008 the Parliament of Kazakhstan ratified two memorandums between Kazakhstan and the USA allowing US and NATO coalition forces to use Almaty airport as "a reserve aerodrome for emergency landings" during military operations in Afghanistan.
