Kazakhstan and China building container hub in Caspian Sea
The container hub is set to increase the capacity of Aktau port, enhance Kazakhstan’s position in the global logistics system as well as expand the potential of transport and logistics sphere, Kazinform News Agency cites the press service of the Kazakh Transport Ministry.
The project is being implemented by Lianyungang Port Co.,Ltd in cooperation with Kazakhstan’s Aktau Sea Trade Port.
Once built, the container hub is set to increase transportation of containers in the Trans-Caspian direction through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye as well as re-direct some part of transit cargo coming from China to Europe.
Dredging works for a container hub are well underway with over 20 specialized vehicles deployed.
Presently, Kazakhstan’s sea port cargo handling has increased 84% to 58,000 TEU, with container transportation via the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) up 2.7fold.
Set to be completed in mid-2025, the project seeks to bring the capacity of Aktau port to up to 240,000 TEU per year.
