Kazakhstan attends 14th meeting of COMSTECH General Assembly

ASTANA. January 11. KAZINFORM A Kazakh delegation headed by Minister of Education and Science Bakytzhan Zhumagulov is taking part in the 14th meeting of the General Assembly of the Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Representatives of 57 OIC member states participated in opening ceremony of the 14th meeting of the COMSTECH General Assembly. The Forum was continued at plenary sessions, where statements of delegations' heads on measures on development of science and technique within COMSTECH programs were heard.

The head of the Kazakh delegation noted in his speech, that 15 years of cooperation of Kazakhstan in the OIC was fruitful. Head of State Nursultan Nazarbayev pays attention to this direction.

The Islamic world in the face of the OIC supported Kazakhstan's presidency in the OSCE in 2010. It ended with the significant event for the XXI century - OSCE Summit in Astana under chairmanship of the Kazakh President.

The Islamic world community supported election of Kazakhstan as a Chairman of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC for 2011-2012 as well. The 38th session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers will be held in Astana in June, 2011. Within the session it is planned to carry out the World Islamic Economic Forum and III Conference of Ministers of Healthcare, events in the sphere of science and new technologies, environmental protection, water resources management, joint promotion of satellite technologies.

The Minister told the gathered of developing cooperation of Kazakhstan with the COMSTECH. Interaction with foreign partners in the sphere of science and technologies allows the Kazakh universities to conduct basic research on a high scientific level. Nano- and biotechnologies, technologies for the hydrocarbon and mining-metallurgical sectors, nuclear technologies and renewable energy, information and space technology and others are among our priorities.

Today over 400 scientific organizations are functioning in Kazakhstan. About 16 thousand specialists work there. Within the framework of the COMSTECH programs a unique spectroscopic complex for creation of new materials was established under the Physical-Technical Institute in Almaty. The Nazarbayev University was created in partnership with the best universities of the world.

"Kazakhstan adopted a new model of scientific development which corresponds to the world experience. The system of management and financing, promotion of the role and status of a scientist, commercialization of research results are under improvement. We are ready for expansion of cooperation with the Islamic countries in the sphere of PhD training, scientists' exchange", B.Zhumagulov said.

The Kazakh Minister is planned to hold meetings with COMSTECH Coordinator General H.E. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, Minister of Science and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani, Minister of Education of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Sardar Asif Ahmad Ali, Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Andrei Fursenko and Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan Ali Abbasov.
