Yerzhan Yelekeev, the Chairman of Kazakh Invest, spoke about a solution to the electricity shortage facing Mangistau region, Kazakhstan, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

Several years ago, Mangistau region faced rolling power outages, spurring the talks between Kazakh Invest and China Huadian Corporation in 2023 to stabilize electricity generation in the region. During the talks, it was agreed to build a natural gas combined cycle plant in Mangistau region, with a wind power plant set to be launched as part of the second stage.

The two systems are to be interconnected. The major source of electrical power will be the wind power plant, except when the natural gas combined cycle plant will come to assist during changes in climate, said Yelekeev on the sidelines of the meeting of the Kazakhstan-China Business Council.

The project led by Mangistau Nuclear Power Plant and China Huadian Corporation is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026.

The construction of the plant is set to be financed by one of the state banks of China.
