Kazakhstan develops broadband Internet access

ASTANA. August 20. KAZINFORM The measures on provision of broadband Internet access with application of CDMA-450/EVDO, FTTH and Wi-Fi technologies are taken in Kazakhstan within the framework of the Program on Information and Communication Technologies Development for 2010-2014, according to Pm.kz.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications of Kazakhstan jointly with the regional akimats and communication services providers work on development of Wi-Fi Internet access in public places.

As the Ministry informs, 406 public places were connected to Wi-Fi Internet over the first quarter of 2012. Thereat, the number of access points reached 1894 (compared to 1819 in 2011), this includes 1137 free access points (against 1067 in 2011).

Presently, EVDO broadband access is available in Kostanay, Zhambyl, South Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, Almaty, Aktobe regions. Residents of Karaganda, West Kazakhstan, Kyzylorda, Atyrau, Mangystau, East Kazakhstan, North Kazakhstan and Akmola regions will be provided with Internet access by the end of 2012. The projects is planned to be completed by 2015.

Besides, passive optical networks FTTH are built in the country since 2010 in order to increase the speed and improve the quality of services. Presently, this technology allows to connect approximately 50 thousand FTTH ports with the speed of 100 Mb/s.

As a result of the project implementation, 146 facilities in Astana, Almaty, Semey, Zhanaozen and other regional centers are connected to the Internet as well as 3718 multi-apartment houses, 2755 cottage houses. FTTH Internet development is planned to be completed in all cities and regional centers by 2015.

It is worth noting that the number of Internet users increased from 15.1 to 50.6 per 100 residents over the period from 2008 to 2011. In January 2012, "Kazakhtelecom" JSC reduced the ceiling prices for primary access to the Internet for communication services providers: by 35% taking into consideration the traffic, by 27% regardless of traffic.

The broadband Internet access ensures high data flow rate, permanent connection to the Internet without the necessity of switched connection. Introduction of the broadband Internet access in Kazakhstan will develop such services as cloud technologies, distance electronic processes, virtualization of calculations, etc.
