Kazakhstan elected member of UNESCO World Heritage Committee

Kazakhstan has been elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for 2023-2027 during the 24th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention Concerning Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Kazinform News Agency cites the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A total of 118 states voted in favour of our country's candidature. Along with Kazakhstan, eight other new members were elected to the Committee: Jamaica, Kenya, Lebanon, the Republic of Korea, Senegal, Türkiye, Ukraine and Viet Nam.

The Intergovernmental World Heritage Committee is one of UNESCO's most important and influential governing bodies. Members of the Committee make decisions on the inscription of cultural and natural sites to the World Heritage List. Kazakhstan has a proven experience working effectively in this body in 2013-2017, and is ready to make its worthy contribution to its further activities.

Composed of 21 states, the Committee reviews nominations of cultural and natural sites to the World Heritage List, evaluates their state of conservation and supports States Parties in their efforts to protect these sites for the sake of future generations. Membership in the Committee contributes to the development of the relevant expertise of States Parties to the Convention in the conservation of cultural and natural heritage.

The World Heritage List includes six national and transboundary sites in Kazakhstan: the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Petroglyphs of the Archaeological Landscape of Tanbaly, Saryarka – Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan, Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor, Western Tien-Shan, Cold Winter Deserts of Turan.
