Kazakhstan exports cattle hides to Africa

In 2023, Kazakhstan produced 2 million 548.5 thousand cattle hides, the Kazakh Agriculture Ministry informed in its response to the inquiry by a Kazinform News Agency correspodent.

Out of 2 million 548,500 cattle hides Kazakhstan produced in 2023, 8% or 208,300 were sent for processing and 13.7% or 349,600 were exported to Russia, Türkiye, Kyrgyzstan and Nigeria, said the ministry.

In turn, Kazakhstan imported 4,500 pieces of skin from Russia. The major challenge facing the country’s hide industry is low processing capacity, as 78% or 1 million 997,100 cattle hides are left unprocessed.

Kazakhstan’s nine hide processing facilities fail to keep up with the country’s total cattle hides production (a mere 8% processed) in spite of their design capacity of up to 3.3 million cattle hides and over 4 million skins of small cattle per year.

In 2023, the facilities’ processing capacities were loaded by 6.3%, reads the response.
