Kazakhstan eyes forming carbon landfills to reduce negative environmental impact
Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov of Kazakhstan highlighted the need for people to adopt more environmentally responsible behavior under the Taza Qazaqstan ecological campaign, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
During the government meeting on Tuesday, Premier Bektenov drew attention to the importance of forming a living ecosystem by creating carbon landfills aimed toward carbon sequestration and reduction of negative environmental impact.
Under the Paris Agreement commitments, the need was highlighted to take efficient measures to reduce emissions into the atmosphere.
It’s important to turn unproductive farmlands and degraded pastures into living ecosystems, plant trees. This worldwide mechanism allows for creation of new green zones – so-called carbon landfills, leading to carbon sequestration and reduction of negative environmental impact, especially near enterprises, stated Bektenov.
The Kazakh Prime Minister also highlighted the need to perform the President’s tasks regarding tree planning in populated areas. ‘Such projects are aimed not only to have a positive effect on the environment, but also to increase forest areas and contribute to urban and rural greening, he added.
Bektenov called on local authorities to open new landfills and solid waste treatment plants as well as carry out work to close and prevent unauthorized dumps in a timely manner.
The Taza Qazaqstan ecological campaign needs to cover all areas of our activity, he concluded.
Earlier it was reported that over 6mln people had participated in the Taza Qazaqstan environmental campaign in 2024.
