Kazakhstan geographical and political bridge between North and South, Europe and Asia: Geneva meeting

ASTANA. July 13. KAZINFORM - Alexey Volkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Kazakhstan, took part in work of the annual Substantive session of Economic and Social Council which has taken place from 10 to 12 July current year in Geneva at the the UN Palais des Nations, the press service of Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs.

Speaking at the session Volkov said about the main directions of cooperation of our country with the UN system institutions and implemented under this organization programs in the context of sustainable development. Currently in Kazakhstan there are 17 institutions and UN agencies demonstrating the high level of bilateral cooperation.

"Kazakhstan acts as geographical and political bridge between North and South, Europe and Asia. Therefore, our country is ideal for facilitating cooperation in international initiatives", says the press service.

Volkov also expressed the need for enhanced collaboration with neighboring countries in addressing common issues such as environment, migration, drug trafficking and potential threat of religious extremism and terrorism. In this regard, one of the strategic decisions from the point of view of Kazakhstan is creation of the UN Regional Centre in Almaty which would serve as a platform for promoting regional development, security and stability.

"Speech of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs has aroused great interest and support from Helen Clark, the UNDP Administrator, heads of the delegations from China, New Zealand, Kyrgyzstan and other event participants", the MFA press service reports.
