Kazakhstan is an ideal place for carbon farming, says Tokayev
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan highlighted the importance of transition to sustainable agriculture while addressing the COP29 Climate Action Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, Akorda reports.
As Tokayev noted, with 200 million ha of agricultural land, Kazakhstan is an ideal place for implementing carbon farming, including agricultural production practices, enabling to reduce emissions and improve the soil quality.
The Kazakh leader welcomed all the sides interested to examine the potential of Kazakhstan in this sector.
Our country accounts for 43% of uranium supplies in the world and plays a significant role in promoting law-carbon nuclear power. This October, Kazakhstanis supported the construction of a nuclear power plant in the national referendum. We seek to make sure that the project is safe and efficient through partnership with the world’s technological leaders in the energy field, said the Head of State.
President Tokayev also spoke about the issues relating to global water resources.
Climate change already has a serious impact on the global water cycle. Water-related disasters account for over 80% of all natural events. This year, Kazakhstan faced the unprecedented floods. The comprehensive risk management system is in place in order to response promptly in the future and recover from similar disasters. Kazakhstan and France are to hold the One Water Summit this December to promote the water agenda. The forum is set to discuss issues regarding global management of water resources. Today, the Caspian Sea is in danger. It’s our common problem to save the world’s largest lake, which requires international cooperation. We support the initiative of Ilham Aliyev to create a group of experts from the Caspian States. Besides, Kazakhstan takes concrete steps to preserve the Aral Sea, said the Kazakh leader.
In conclusion, Head of State Tokayev expressed gratitude to his Azerbaijani counterpart for the organization of the summit and Azerbaijan’s successful presidency of COP29. The Kazakh leader reiterated Kazakhstan’s commitment to multilateral work, aimed at establishing a just, inclusive and transparent climate agenda, as well as expressed the readiness for further cooperation with international partners.
It is expected that leaders from over 80 countries, heads of international and regional organizations are to address the event.
