Kazakhstan joins Declaration to triple nuclear energy by 2050
Kazakh Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yessimkhanov attended an event to promote efforts aimed at tripling nuclear energy capacity as part of the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, Kazinform News Agency cites the Kazakh Energy Ministry.
Addressing those present Vice Minister Yessimkhanov announced that Kazakhstan joined the Declaration to triple global nuclear energy by 2050 to decarbonize the global economy and to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions to meet the Paris Agreement goals.
He said Kazakhstan’s accession to the declaration is a major step forward to a sustainable and green future. Kazakhstan remains committed not only to strengthening energy security but also to contributing to the global reduction of carbon emissions in cooperation with the global community to achieve the common goal.
He added nuclear energy was recognized as one of the key solutions to keep the 1.5-degree Celsius goal within reach.
25 countries had already endorsed the Declaration, namely, Armenia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Finland, France, Czechia, Ghana, Hungary, Jamaica, the Republic of Korea, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
As earlier reported, 71.12% of Kazakhstanis voted for the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant.
