ASTANA. March 25. KAZINFORM Kazakhstan has joined the global Earth Hour lights-out event to be held March 26, a press release on the website of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) issued on Friday said; Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.

Earth Hour is organized annually on the last Saturday of March by the WWF. From across the Pacific, to Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas, iconic landmarks such as the New York Empire State Building and the Sydney Opera House in Australia will go dark. Individuals and organizations will switch off nonessential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to attract public attention to environmental problems.

The campaign will kick off at 8.30 p.m. local time. "The World Wide Fund for Nature hopes that the Kazakhs will support this token campaign and will switch off their lights for an hour as well as plant trees, organize bike rides, hold litter collection events, thus showing their concern about the future of Kazakhstan's and the global environment," the press release prepared by WWF and Kazakhstan's ecological organization said.

"Earth Hour is a chance for people and communities across the globe to join together with the common purpose of a sustainable future for our planet," said Andy Ridley, cofounder and executive director of Earth Hour. "This year Earth Hour asks people to commit to the event, big or small, for the coming year, taking Earth Hour beyond the hour."
