Kazakhstan joins Global Methane Pledge

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, the UAE, Kazinform News Agency reports.

Indeed, as the world decarbonizes, critical minerals, including rare earths, will become irreplaceable in the coming decades. Kazakhstan is ready to become the main supplier of these transition minerals. We also actively support private green initiatives, said Tokayev.

The Kazakh President believes it is fair not to demand from emerging economies to sacrifice national development and modernization in the name of climate protection.

On the contrary, these goals should go hand in hand and reinforce each other. Bold steps are needed. Reducing methane emissions is the fastest way to slow the rate of global warming. That is why I am pleased to announce that Kazakhstan has decided to join the Global Methane Pledge. At the same time, we are committed to solving the massive coal problem in our region by implementing the region's first Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) in Kazakhstan, said Tokayev.
