Kazakhstan likely to buy a plant for processing of persistent organic pollutants

sp;ASTANA. November 16. KAZINFORM. /Muratbek Makulbekov/ 22 billion tons of waste including 16 billion tons of mineral waste and 6 billion tons of toxic waste have been accumulated in Kazakhstan. Kazakh Minister of Environmental Protection Nurgali Ashimov has made it public at a Governmental Hour in the Majilis today.

The Minister made a report on the problems of the complex waste processing and implementation of the Kyoto Protocol mechanisms.

"Average per capita waste generation in Kazakhstan is 1,381 tons a year while for instance in Germany it is only 400 kilograms", N. Ashimov said. According to the Minister, Kazakhstan has no region free of waste. The oil-polluted area is 5,000 hectares.

Mr. Nurgaliyev reminded of the state program "Environment of Kazakhstan for 2010-2020". In this context he told about the plans to buy a plant for processing of persistent organic pollutants and place it on the territory of Kazakhstan.
