Kazakhstan's space harbor, in his words, is visited by nearly 60 thousand tourists annually. The guests come to explore local museums and watch rocket launches.

"The governor of our region has already eyed with the President of Kazakhstan the opportunity to include Baikonur into the list of facilities that might be suggested as tourism destinations for guests of the upcoming EXPO-2017 event. The visitors will get a chance to tour the space complex and the town and see rocket launches with their own eyes," N. Zhaliyev noted. He also believes 'EXPO-2017 will give a great impulse to the development of tourism in that region, in general.'

Said Mr. Zhaliyev of Baikonur to Kazinform correspondent: "I see a huge potential in that town. Baikonur will become an attractive tourist cluster, if Kazakhstan works in conjunction with Russia in that direction."

"Kazakhstan and Russia may use the Baikonur complex as a tourism destination. There is an intergovernmental agreement for that matter. Perhaps, the agreement will play its role and the town will be opened for mass tourism," he elaborated.

According to N. Zhaliyev, the neighboring regions also have latent tourism potential. "There is the Korkyt ata memorial complex not far from Baikonur (50km). Ancient capital of the Oguzs - Zhankent, Lake Kambash and many other sites are also bound to attract tourists' attention," he believes.
