Kazakhstan, Russia to cement friendly ties in a new treaty this year: Lavrov

Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov announced Thursday while delivering a lecture at the Gumilyov Eurasian National University in Astana.

"The Treaty on good neighborliness and alliance in the 21st century is being prepped on the instruction of presidents Vladimir Putin and Nursultan Nazarbayev. The document is expected to be signed till the end of this year," Minister Lavrov said.

The Russian diplomat elaborated that the new treaty will bring cooperation between the two nations to a brand new level. It [treaty] takes into account realities of the modern world, achieved agreements on further development of economic integration in the context of work on creation of the Eurasian economic union.

Speaking of commercial and economic relations, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry reminded 'Russia and Kazakhstan share the longest land border of more than 7.6 thousand kilometers.'

"Russia and Kazakhstan enjoy interregional and cross-border interaction, commercial and economic cooperation is embracing new directions. In the volume of sales turnover between the two countries the share of cross border trade amounts to 40%," S. Lavrov noted.
