Kazakhstan selects flag-bearers for 2024 Winter Youth Olympics in S. Korea

Kazakhstani speedskater Kristina Shumekova and short track speedskater Yerasyl Shyngyskhan have been chosen to bear Kazakhstan’s flag at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics opening ceremony to take place in South Korea, Kazinform News Agency cites the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the country.   

According to the source, 18-year-old Kristina Shumekova from Petropavlovsk is a master of sport of Kazakhstan in speedskating, champion of Kazakhstan in her age category, silver medalist of the 2023 Speed Skating World Championships in Italy.

This is a very exciting moment for me. To represent Kazakhstan at the Winter Olympic Games is not only an honor but also a huge responsibility, said Kristina.

Uralsk native Yerassyl Shyngyskhan, 17, is a candidate for master of sport of Kazakhstan in short track, champion of Kazakhstan in his age category, as well as silver medalist of the 2023 Children of Asia international winter sports games.

For me, it is a huge responsibility to bear the flag of our country in Gangwon… To compete in the Youth Olympic Games is a great experience for each of us, part of our professional growth, said Yerassyl.

The 2024 Winter Youth Olympics to take place from January 19 through February 1 in Gangwon province, South Korea
