Kazakhstan to buy 226 passenger railroad cars in 2025

Minister of Transport Marat Karabayev reported today to the Cabinet on the plans to modernize the country’s rolling stock, Kazinform News Agency reports.

According to him, Kazakhstan’s fleet of locomotives includes 1,807 units with the wear level at 61%.

In his words, Kazakhstan had bought 185 locomotives this year and plans to purchase another 187 in 2025. In the next three years, the country will receive another 257 locomotives.

As for the freight cars, their number across the country has reached 139,000.

“More than 300 private operators are working in the market today. Of them, 38,000 freight cars belong to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy company, which are involved in socially important transportations, thus in the country’s energy sector and in coal transportation. By 2026, the National Operator plans to supply 3,000 open railroad freight cars, 800 of which have already been commissioned this year,” Karabayev said.

The Ministry also focuses on renovation of the fleet of passenger railroad cars, with 118 new ones bought in 2023, and 143 purchased in 2024. 226 passenger railroad cars are set to be acquired in 2025.

“By 2029, we plan to buy around 1,200 units of passenger railroad cars, due to which the total number of railroad freight cars will exceed 3,000 and wear level will be reduced to 38%,” the minister said.
