Kazakhstan to construct six landfills in Karaganda region

A total of six new landfills are scheduled to be constructed in the Karaganda region over the coming years. Work has commenced on one of the landfills in Abai district. The facility will span 10 hectares and is situated 3 km from Abai, Kazinform News Agency reports.

Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Karaganda region, Bakhtiyar Sanbayev, provided an overview of the Taza (Clean) Qazaqstan campaign and its interim results at a press briefing on the Regional Communications Service platform.

“It is anticipated that six additional landfills with sorting lines will be constructed in the districts of Balkhash, Abai, Karkaralinsk, Bukhar-Zhyrau, Shet, and Nura over the next three years. Construction has already commenced in Abai district. The remaining sites will be developed once the design and construction plans have been finalized. The region currently has 168 landfills, 51 of which are in compliance with environmental and sanitary regulations,” Sanbayev stated.

The regional implementation of the republican Taza Qazaqstan campaign is ongoing. To date, 149 thousand individuals have participated in the initiative, 70 thousand tons of waste have been removed, and 1,102 containers and 278 container sites have been installed.

Sanitary cleaning was conducted in 273 parks and squares throughout the region. Additionally, 441 historical and cultural monuments underwent repair and restoration, and over 131 thousand trees and 7 thousand bushes were planted. Bakhtiyar Sanbayev stated that 125 water bodies were cleaned, 6,981 warnings were issued under Article 505 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, and 645 fines were issued.

Furthermore, the fight against illicit waste disposal sites is underway in the Karaganda region. A total of 193 locations were identified by employees of the regional department of ecology where illegal dumping of garbage was taking place. Of these, 123 were subsequently eliminated. The use of space monitoring has facilitated the detection of 303 dumpsites, which are currently being eliminated.

The Taza Qazaqstan campaign will last until the yearend.
