It’s encouraging that the number of horses in the country is increasing stably. However, the share of thoroughbred horses is less than 1%, meaning out of the country’s total 4.2 million horses, only 40,000 are thoroughbred. That’s why, it’s necessary to attach special attention to selection and breeding of thoroughbred horses, said the Head of State.

President Tokayev noted that Kazakhstan grows several breeds of horses, with the dzhabe (Zhaby) breed taking a special place, the history of which is closely connected with the life of the Kazakh people. Kostanayskaya, Kushumskaya and Mugaldzharskaya breeds were developed later, with each having their advantages and features.

In one of my speeches, I already spoke about the Abai horse breed, which is the priceless treasure of Mangistau. I instructed to take concrete measures to promote this breed in the world back then. The Adai breed is officially recognized, representing our country at different races and competitions. The Kostanayskaya breed has an extraordinary stamina, however, it is on the verge of disappearance with only 280 heads left, said the President.

Head of State Tokayev instructed the government to set up an Institute of Horse Breeding.

To note, this year, Kazakhstan adopted the special law aimed at conserving and reproducing the domestic horse breeds. The number of horses in the country has risen significantly to 4.3 million in the past few years.

To note, the Kazakh capital of Astana is hosting the 1st Agriculture Workers’ Forum.
