Kazakhstan-UN cooperation prospects discussed in Astana
The parties focused on a wide range of issues of cooperation including management of water-energy resources in Central Asia; the problems caused by illegal migration, drug-trafficking and trans-border crimes; countering extremism and terrorism; and the situation in the region including the Afghan problem.
Touching upon Afghanistan K. Saudabayev noted the relevance of countering terrorism, illegal drug-trafficking and religious extremism and confirmed Astana's intention to render all-round assistance in socio-economic rehabilitation of this country.
Speaking on the current situation in Kyrgyzstan the Minister informed of development of an Interstate Assistance Program for the friendly country on the Kazakh President's instruction.
As for interaction in multilateral format, K. Saudabayev said that Kazakhstan as the SCO presiding country intended to assist in further strengthening of cooperation of this authoritative regional organization with the UN structures.
In turn M. Jenca noted the growth in Kazakhstan-UN cooperation on the regional and global levels. "The recent appointment of Kazakhstan Parliament Speaker K. Tokayev to the post of the UN Under Secretary General - Director General of the UN Office in Geneva proves it", he stressed.
The Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia was founded by the UN Secretary General in accordance with the global counter-terrorism strategy of the organization and the recommendations of the High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change in order to strengthen the UN potential in prevention of conflicts. The Centre is based in Ashgabat.
