Increasing mutual trade turnover to 10 billion US dollars is a new promising goal in the relations between Astana and Tashkent. Last week, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev paid a state visit to Kazakhstan. The leaders of the two countries discussed prospects for the development of relations in trade and economic, transport and transit, and investment sectors, first in a narrow format and then at the meeting of the first Supreme Interstate Council.

Kazakhstan remains one of Uzbekistan’s largest trade partners, accounting for 9.3% of Uzbekistan’s total foreign trade. Trade between the two nations continues to grow, with last year’s exports surpassing $3 billion and imports reaching $1 billion. According to President Tokayev, mutual trade can reach $5 billion in the coming years and eventually $10 billion by broadening the range of goods traded and eliminating economic barriers. Notably, Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s state visit to Kazakhstan coincided with the 6th consultative meeting of Central Asian presidents that took place in Astana. Experts are highlighting promising prospects in transport communications and the establishment of a unified energy market. The concept of three consortia — focusing on transport and logistics, water and energy, and food were initially proposed by the leaders of the five Central Asian states in the 1990s. Although the idea was revisited last year, it remains unsigned, and experts are hopeful for its eventual realization.

On top of that, Kazakh national team has won seven medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Consisting of 80 athletes across 25 sports, national team has gained one gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, securing 31st place in overall medal standings. New Time reporters talked to the athletes and analysts to review Kazakhstan's performance in Paris.
