Head of the ministry Aslan Sarinzhipov put forward the proposal at the Government session on Tuesday.

"Higher education institutions in Kazakhstan still keep to the old principles and traditions. The Ministry [of Education and Science] regulates higher education in the country. What is more, the content of education is governed by the law on education," Minister Sarinzhipov said.

"What we suggest is to denationalize the higher education institutions and give them more autonomy to increase the competition among universities and students as well," A. Sarinzhipov added.

For that to happen, according to the minister, Kazakhstan needs new organizational and legal program of universities' development, result-oriented financing, collective leadership and fight against corruption.

In his words, the suggested measures will lift Kazakhstan in the global competitiveness index.
