Kazakhstani MP, UN Special Rapporteur meet in Astana

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - Member of Majilis, the lower chamber of the Kazakh Parliament, and the chamber's Committee for international affairs, defense and security Kuanysh Sultanov met with UN Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and waters Baskut Tuncak in Astana on Friday.

At the meeting, majilisman Sultanov briefed the UN expert on the environmental rights of Kazakhstani citizens enshrined in the Constitution, the Ecological Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Concept of the Republic of Kazakhstan on transition to sustainable development for 2007-2024. Mr. Tuncak, in turn, highly estimated human rights work in Kazakhstan and praised the country's contribution to solution of regional and global problems. Kuanysh Sultanov responded by thanking the UN Special Rapporteur for constructive cooperation in protection and promotion of human rights. He added that Kazakhstan is ready for further constructive cooperation with UN agencies. The expert, who is visiting the country at the invitation of the Government of Kazakhstan, will meet with government officials, business representatives, civil society and community organizations and residents in Astana, Almaty, Atyrau, Ust-Kamenogorsk and Karaganda. He will also meet with representatives of the international community and UN officials as well. Baskut Tuncak will present his final comprehensive report on the human rights assessment in relation to the management of hazardous substances and wastes in Kazakhstan to the UN Human Rights Council.
