Kazakhstan's November: Warm weather and record-breaking temperatures
Kazakhstan experienced an unusually warm November, with several temperature records across the country, according to the Kazakhstan Hydrometeorological Service, Kazhydromet. The warm weather, particularly in the first half of the month, brought temperatures well above the typical seasonal average, Kazinform News Agency reports.
On November 3, the meteorological stations in Balkhash and Pavlodar reported record-breaking highs. In Balkhash, the temperature reached +15.9°C, surpassing the previous record of +15.8°C set in 1955. In Pavlodar, temperatures climbed to +15.6°C, breaking the 1988 record of +13.7°C.
By the second week of November forecasters noted, “At the beginning of the second ten-day period of November, an anticyclone from the Kara Sea regions covered most of Kazakhstan, causing a drop in air temperature at night to -11-19°C, in the south to -5-10°C. In some areas of the center and east, the thermometer dropped to -23-29°C.” In Aktogai, Karaganda region, temperatures reached -26.2°C on November 13, breaking the 2018 record of -25.1°C.
Throughout November, cyclones with active atmospheric fronts brought strong winds and heavy precipitation to much of Kazakhstan. Kazhydromet reported several record-breaking weather events, including 16 mm of rain at the Basquduk station in Aktobe region on November 1, matching the monthly norm.
On November 5, the Uil station recorded 15 mm of rain, above the norm of 22 mm, and on November 11, Kurshim station saw 30 mm of rain, exceeding the norm of 28 mm. Strong winds were also widespread, with gusts reaching 30 m/s at the Burabay station on November 3 and 31 m/s at the Taraz station on November 6. On November 7, the Dostyk station recorded wind gusts of 36 m/s, with other stations reporting similar conditions.
The month concluded with strong winds at the Shokpar station on November 24, where winds reached 36 m/s.
In the capital, Astana , the average temperature for November was -3.5°C, which was 1.7°C above normal for the month. Kazhydromet reported, “the average monthly air temperature was -3.5°C, which is 1.7°C higher than the norm (the norm is -5.2°C). The lowest air temperature was recorded on November 30 -14.8°C, November 3 the highest air temperature was +13.6°С. Precipitation for the month was 38 mm, with the norm being 29 mm, which was 131% of the norm.”
Forecasters noted the significant weather fluctuations, with the first decade of November marked by warmer-than-usual temperatures and multiple records, while the latter part of the month brought colder conditions and strong winds across much of the country.
Earlier today, Kazinform News Agency reported that Kazhydromet had issued a weather forecast for Kazakhstan from December 24-26, with temperatures expected to drop as low as -35°C in parts of the country.
