Kokshetau declares local state of emergency over floods

The city of Kokshetau has declared the local state of emergency due to flooding as the amount of water in the Chaglinskiy dam rises by over 150 million cubic meters per day, Kazinform News Agency cite the internal policy department of Akmola region.

Ice blocking occurred before the bridge on Abai Street leading to water overflow on March 28. In order to prevent more serious consequences, 8,456 cubic meters of water were removed, 4,167 bags stacked, and 500 meters of channels were widened and deepened. Nine culverts were cleared; 250 cubic meters of snow were removed. 395 people and 160 vehicles, including 12 motor pumps were deployed, said Kokshetau city’s administration.

As a result of floods, 101 people were evacuated, many of whom were accommodated at the social adaptation center of Kokshetau city with provision of bed places and hot meals. Those affected are to be provided to support, the local authority said.

Addressing the citizens of Kokshetau, mayor Baurzhan Gaisa conveyed the words of thanks to the residents who assisted in battling floods and added that all necessary measures are taken to stabilize the situation and minimize the possible threats.

Earlier, Kazakh cities of Aktobe and Uralsk also declared the local state of emergency due to flooding.
