Kyrgyzstan celebrates People's Revolution Day
People's Revolution Day has been a holiday in Kyrgyzstan since 2006, but no official ceremonies have been held on this day for several years.
The uprising brought former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev to power, forcing the first Kyrgyz President, Askar Akayev, to leave the country, according to Interfax.
The uprising led by Bakiyev was in protest at the violation of democratic freedom, corruption, and nepotism at the top government level.
Five years later, identical accusations were brought against Bakiyev by his former opposition allies, including incumbent transitional President Roza Otunbayeva and current Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev.
Bakiyev was himself ousted in April last year and fled into exile in Belarus, Kazinform refers to Trend News.
