The landslide, caused by heavy rain, occurred in Winchomayo, a remote village in Carabaya province, about 1,300 kilometers southeast of Lima, between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. (1100 GMT and 1200 GMT). Rescue workers were looking for survivors, and a helicopter had been sent to the scene with an aid team carrying medicine and supplies for the homeless, officials said. The village is in an area inaccessible by road, and machinery might not be available for the rescue effort. The village has only a small population of about 50 people, most of them miners; Kazinform cites Xinhua.
