Longest canals of Kazakhstan announced
The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan announced the longest canals in Kazakhstan, Kazinform News Agency reports.
Located on the left bank of the Syr Darya River, the Zhanadarya Canal, an artificial watercourse, has a total length of 555.4 km. The canal is designed to provide water for pasture areas in the Kyzylorda region.
The Irtysh–Karaganda Canal is an irrigation canal for water supply of industrial areas and agriculture of Central Kazakhstan. The 459 km canal runs through the Pavlodar region. As Karaganda is located at a higher elevation than the Irtysh, the canal is furnished with 22 pumping stations, raising the water by 418 meters in total. On average, one pumping station pumps 18 cubic meters of water per second or 1.5 million cubic meters per day.
The Arys-Turkistan Canal has a length of 196 km and is located in the Turkistan region. It consists of two main canals: the Arys Canal (51 km) and the Turkestan Canal (145 km).
The Big Almaty Canal is situated within the Ili River basin. The project was initiated by Dinmukhamed Kunaev, who successfully secured an allocation of over 270 million Soviet rubles. The length of the canal is 168 km.
The Turkistan region boasts of having the Kyzylkum Canal as well. The canal's length is 116.3 km. The canal is utilized for the irrigation of over 74,300 ha of land, in addition to the discharge of floodwaters in the event of a potential overflow of the Shardara reservoir.
