Malaysia's population seen to grow 1.9 pct in Q2
Malaysia's total population in the second quarter was estimated at 34.1 million as compared to 33.4 million a year ago, with a growth of 1.9 percent, official data showed Tuesday, Xinhua reports.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement that the total population comprised 90 percent of citizens and 10 percent of non-citizens.
The male population increased to 17.9 million from 17.5 million a year ago while the female population rose to 16.2 million from 15.9 million.
Ethnic Malays accounted for 58.1 percent of the population in the second quarter. Chinese and Indians accounted for 22.4 percent and 6.5 percent respectively, while others made up 12.3 percent.
The number of live births in the cited period recorded a decrease of 10.2 percent to 100,732 births as compared to 112,197 births a year ago.
Meanwhile, a total of 48,460 deaths were recorded in the second quarter, a decrease of 5.4 percent as compared to 51,234 a year ago.
