Mass media should not have a field day with suicide details but prevent them - Zulfiya Baisakova
Psychologists, representatives of public bodies, non-governmental organizations cite a lot of facts and figures showing the growth in the number of suicides in the world. "So, about 1 million people died from suicide in 2000, and by 2020 their number may double. Over the past 45 years all over the world, the number of suicides increased by 60%. In Kazakhstan, 260 teenagers committed suicide in 2009; there were 237 such cases in 2010 " it was noted.
Experts considered issues of personal relations, including the relationships between children and their parents, the role of parents, teachers and society in children's education, and also conducted analysis and monitoring of problems in this field.
The main cause of the suicide is lack of mutual understanding in the family, and of care of the relatives. Material wealth and children's need in emotional support were named as other causes. First of all, parents are to be taught to love their children, and to take care of them," member of the Psychologists' Association of Kazakhstan Anastasia Steblyanko noted.
The role of the mass media was also stressed. Mass media should not savor details of suicides, but help the society prevent them.
"It is sad that there is growing interest in suicidal events. The resonance of the society generates new cases and it is necessary to identify area of risk and develop a common set of measures aimed at ensuring the safety of the public, including children and young people," the Chairman of Legal Entities 'Union of Crisis Centers ' in Kazakhstan Zulfiyya Baysakova emphasized.
Recommendations and mechanisms on preventing of suicidal ideation among the people were developed during the roundtable within the interagency cooperation.
