Meet Aibek and Nurbek Oralbay, first set of boxing twins to represent Kazakhstan at 2024 Paris Games

Boxing brothers - Aibek Oralbay and Nurbek Oralbay from Astana – will represent Kazakhstan at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in two different weight divisions, first ever in the history of the country’s boxing. The brothers secured their Olympic berths at the World Qualifying Tournament held in Busto Arsizio March 3-11, Kazinform News Agency reports.

According to Myrzagali Aitzhanov, chief coach of the national boxing team, Aibek and Nurbek Oralbay are the children from the same family.

"To be more precise, they are twins. Nurbek competes in men’s 80kg and Aibek fights in men’s 92kg. They both won their 2024 Olympic Games berths. Here, both of them trained being the members of the national team and went to the qualifying tournament together. Both of them got their Olympic berths. So, they are going to be the first set of boxing twins to represent Kazakhstan at the Olympic Games," Myrzagali Aitzhanov says. 

As reported before, Aibek secured a berth for Paris after beating American Jamar Talley 5-0 in the 92kg quarterfinal, and Nurbek got his berth having eliminated Kelyn Cassidy of Ireland in the 80 kg quarterfinals bout.

Aibek Oralbay is the winner of the 2018 Asian Youth Boxing Championships, silver medalist of the 2018 AIBA Youth World Championships. In October of 2018, he claimed a gold medal at the III Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he defeated Puerto Rican sportsman Alvin Canales in the semifinals by judges’ unanimous decision, and beat on points Mohammed Amin Hasid from Algeria in the finals. In November 2022, he won the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan, in the 92kg weight division.

Nurbek Oralbay holds a silver medal of the 2018 Asian Youth Boxing Championships, and a gold medal of the 2018 AIBA Youth World Championships. In November 2022, he clinched a bronze medal at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan in men’s 80kg. In May 2023, he claimed champion’s title at the 2023 IBA Men's World Amateur Boxing Championships where he defeated ethnic Kazakh Tokhtarbek Tanatkhan from China.
