Meet Meta’s Orion: the next frontier in AR eyewear

Meta has officially announced the launch of Orion, previously referred to as Project Nazare, which is an advancement in augmented reality (AR) technology. According to Meta, “What makes Orion unique is that it is unmistakably a pair of glasses in both look and feel – complete with transparent lenses. Unlike MR headsets or other AR glasses today, you can still see other people’s eyes and expressions, so you can be present and share the experience with the people around you.” This design choice sets Orion apart from existing AR devices, allowing users to engage with their surroundings while interacting with augmented content.

Orion is positioned as a transformative step in the evolution of smart glasses, addressing the limitations associated with conventional smartphone displays. The device offers users the capability to interact with holographic visuals in real-world settings, and it’s also combined with contextual artificial intelligence.

Meta highlights that Orion boasts the largest field of view within the smallest form factor to date: “Orion has the largest field of view in the smallest AR glasses form to date. That field of view unlocks truly immersive use cases for Orion, from multitasking windows and big-screen entertainment to life-size holograms of people – all digital content that can seamlessly blend with your view of the physical world.”

Looking to the future, Meta has outlined plans for the ongoing development of Orion and its broader AR product line. The initial rollout will provide access to Meta employees and select external audiences, allowing the company to gather feedback and refine the device.

As development continues, Meta highlighted that “Orion isn’t just a window into the future – it’s a look at the very real possibilities within reach today. From Ray-Ban Meta glasses to Orion, we’ve seen the good that can come from letting people stay more present and empowered in the physical world, while tapping into all that the digital world has to offer.”
