Minister: Kazakhstan will not hold referendum to build 2nd nuclear power plant

Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev has ruled out holding a referendum on construction of a second nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

During the extended meeting Tuesday, the plans were voiced to build a second nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.

When asked whether there will be a referendum, Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev said that ‘there is no need’.

The plant will be built upon the Government’s decision in accordance with the legislation, he replied.

Earlier, Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov announced the necessary agreements on the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant in Almaty region will be concluded soon.

On October 6, Kazakhstan held a nationwide referendum on construction of its first nuclear power plant. 71.12% of voters (5,561,937 people) voted for the NPP construction, while 26.13% (2,045,271 people) voted against. The voter's turnout reached 63.66% or 7,820,204 people.
