A bone marrow transplantation department opened at Minsk Teaching Hospital No. 9 in October 1993. This marked the beginning of clinical cell transplantation in Belarus. Since 1998 the National Research Center for Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology has been transplanting bone marrow in children. Over nearly 15 years the center has conducted over 1,700 stem cell transplant surgeries.

Belarus has amassed considerable experience in transplanting hematopoietic stem cells that are used to treat blood, heart and autoimmune diseases. The number of transplant surgeries conducted in Belarus is increasing year to year and now exceeds 150 surgeries per year.
