ASTANA. May 18. KAZINFORM "Kazakhstan and the US: 20 Years of Partnership for the Sake of Security and Development" international conference is held today at Nazarbayev Center in Astana.

Director of the Nazarbayev Center Kanat Saudabayev read the text of the welcome address by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the conference.

"Nonproliferation and reduction of mass destruction weapons is the key idea of Kazakh-US partnership. Our cooperation in this important area over the years has risen to the highest level of trust and effective collaboration. At a recent summit on nuclear security in Seoul, together with the presidents of the United States and Russia, we announced the completion of major works at the Semipalatinsk test site, and with the heads of dozens of states planned further measures to strengthen the global nuclear safety," the President's message reads.

"In May 1992 at the invitation of US President George Bush I paid my first official visit to Washington. During that visit we laid solid foundation for the development of cooperation between our countries on the basis of friendship, mutual understanding and respect. All those years, our countries have been actively developing political dialogue. Today, looking back in the past, we can proudly say that over 20 years of its independent development Kazakhstan in cooperation with the U.S. and other countries has become a reliable and respected partner of the international community," the President emphasized.
